The Melrose Centre

Who we are...

The Melrose Centre is an additionally resourced provision for ASD students with MLD, based within Longbenton Community College.  The Centre opened in September 2009 and is still very much in its developmental stages.  It will take a number of years to evolve and the plan is to allow for this growth to be gradual, however in some areas progress is developing much quicker than had been anticipated.

The current student population consists of 10 pupils in year 8 and another 5 pupils who joined us in September who are the current year 7s.  Classes are taught primarily according to year group, however pupils who need a higher level of input form another group.  We do provide some after school  provision (Monday - Wednesday) but places are strictly limited.  We also hope to offer a week of activities within the centre during the Summer holidays, however this is dependent upon funding.

Curriculum

We follow the Key Stage 3 national curriculum, tailoring lessons to cater to the needs of our pupils.  There is a heavy focus on the ‘hidden’ curriculum within our lessons, promoting
life-skills, independence and social communication skills wherever opportunity arises.  Whilst most lessons are taught within the centre, some lessons such as music and PE are taught elsewhere in the school by subject specialists.  We also have a specialist geography teacher who comes into the centre to teach our pupils.  We also have regular input from our SALT and OT.

The pupils at the Melrose Centre have settled in brilliantly.  The new year 7 pupils have already adapted to being part of a busy mainstream school and move about to and from the Melrose Centre to other parts of the building confidently.

Inclusion

Inclusion is something that is very important to us at the Melrose Centre and we are very proud of what has been achieved, particularly by the pupils, in such a short space of time.  This is thanks to the support of mainstream staff and students within Longbenton.

There are many ways in which we promote inclusion; the majority of our pupils eat in the school canteen, selecting their own meals and eating alongside mainstream pupils.  Some of our students are supported by Melrose Centre staff to regularly attend lessons in the mainstream for certain subjects and mainstream pupils from Longbenton come into the Melrose Centre to work with the students.  The relationships that have been built up between both parties are fabulous, Longbenton pupils are extremely helpful and friendly towards Melrose Centre pupils as they move around the school, building their independence, communication and social skills.

Inclusion only takes place as is appropriate to the individual child’s needs and is not pushed onto the child whereby it will cause distress or anxiety.
