A Vision for Longbenton Community College

Mission Statement

We will encourage all members of the college to have the power and aspiration to seek truth, knowledge and understanding by acquiring skills to think independently in order to take responsibility for their own learning. This will enable members of the college to become successful, adaptable learners, who will become responsible, caring, moral citizens able to make positive contributions to the local and global community.

A Vision for Longbenton Community College

The college will empower all students to become independent learners. We shall endeavour to build confidence, self-esteem and perseverance in our students by providing them with a varied and appropriate curriculum. We will value a wide range of skills and opportunities, broadening our educational horizon to have more vocational learning including work based training. The curriculum will be sufficiently flexible and broad to personalise learning around the needs, interests and strengths of students.

We will strive to achieve a college in which each department has their own area, with every teacher feeling a sense of ownership for their teaching base. Specialist world class teaching and learning facilities, including practical areas such as performing arts and sports facilities, will provide an inspiring, successful learning environment. Our ideal college will include high quality social areas for staff and students, areas that we can all take pride in, as well as comfortable and quiet study areas. We believe that such facilities will create high expectations in college members. Our facilities will be very environmentally friendly, particularly in the use of energy, and we shall promote respect for the environment in our teaching and learning programmes.

Regular, quality feedback is vital for staff and students to maximise their potential. We will develop an ethos of trust, honesty and confidentiality where staff and students will believe they are really being listened to and value. Quality time will be put aside for feedback to take place, with dedicated time for observations. We will collaboratively review current systems of reports and parent contact to ensure we carry out effective, valuable feedback that is not onerous to staff.

We shall endeavour to develop the motivation of our older students to equip them with the essential skills for learning, preparing them for further study. We shall discuss ways to address the pressure felt by students who study a high number of GCSEs and consider how class size affects learning.

The college will provide the highest level of care for all of its students. The pastoral care system will have personnel with both the appropriate expertise, and the time, to provide quality support not compromised by teaching demands. The critical role of the form tutor will be nurtured to allow time for positive relationships to develop. We shall ensure that we communicate with parents on issues relating to their children by using suitable technology and facilitate online access to allow parents to view appropriate student information.

As a specialist technology college, we will strive for continuous high levels of investment in proven technologies that will make a positive difference to teaching, learning opportunities and provision for the local community. We will ensure time is given to source new technology and underpin this with a robust, reliable network infrastructure and effective technical support.

We will ensure that our culture of high standards and expectations are a part of everyday interactions at the college. We shall continue to seek good examination results by ensuring that teachers have enough time to plan quality lessons and resources.

We continue to recognise that the high quality of staff, and teaching, contributes to our current and future success. We value all our students, staff and parents and remain committed to serving our wider community. We see Longbenton Community College as the ‘College of Choice’ in the locality and our good reputation is something of which we are justifiably proud.
