Principles of our Behaviour for Learning Policy

At Longbenton High School, good behaviour is central to a good education. Our policy is based on the belief that every student has the right to learn, every member of staff has the right to teach, and every family has the right to know that the school has clear expectations, routines, rewards and consequences.

Our approach is Warm Strict. We combine high expectations, clear boundaries and consistent consequences with care, support, dignity and positive relationships. We expect all students to follow our 3 basic rules. Listen when spoken to. Always do what is asked first time of asking. Be on time every time. These expectations are underpinned by our KIDMAP values of Kindness, Integrity, Determination, Manners, Ambition and Positivity.

The policy sets out how we promote positive behaviour, prevent poor behaviour where possible, define unacceptable behaviour, respond to bullying and discrimination, use rewards and sanctions, support students with additional needs, and maintain a calm, safe and purposeful school environment. It applies in lessons, around school, on the journey to and from school, during school activities, and online where behaviour affects the school community.

The Governing Body is responsible for setting the overall principles of the policy, consulting where appropriate, monitoring its effectiveness and holding the Headteacher to account. The Headteacher is responsible for putting the policy into practice, ensuring staff apply it fairly and consistently, and making decisions about serious sanctions, including suspension and permanent exclusion, in line with statutory guidance. Staff, students and parents all have a shared responsibility to uphold the policy so that Longbenton High School remains a safe, respectful and ambitious place to learn.
