Transition to Secondary
Welcome to the Longbenton High School (LHS) Transition page. We understand that moving from primary to secondary school is a significant milestone, and our comprehensive transition programme is designed to ensure every student feels confident, welcome, and ready to succeed.
The Aim of Transition at LHS
Our primary goal is to build strong, lasting relationships with our feeder primary schools and their families. We have a dedicated member of staff who leads on transition - Mrs Lambert who has an excellent relationship with feeder schools and will collate important imformation regarding your child. We strive to:
- Get students "secondary ready" by developing their independence and resilience.
- Build a sense of community and belonging within new tutor groups and houses.
- Provide a clear and supportive roadmap for both students and parents to ensure a smooth emotional and academic shift.
Our Transition Journey: Key Events
We offer a year-long calendar of activities to familiarise students with life at LHS:
- Open Evening and Tours for prospective parents (September/Autumn): An initial opportunity for families to explore our facilities and meet our staff.
- Year 5/6 Primary Assemblies: Our leadership team visits primary schools to introduce our values and expectations.
- Welcome Event: Following National Offer Day, we host a special welcome event for students and parents.
- Inspire Clubs (Summer Term 2): After-school extra-curricular clubs specifically for Year 6 students to help them build friendships and explore new interests.
- Small School Transition Morning (June 29th): A dedicated session for students coming from smaller feeder schools to meet key staff and peers in a smaller setting.
- Main Transition Days (Early July): A two-day immersive experience where students:
- Find out their tutor group and house.
- Experience taster lessons and view school facilities.
- Participate in house competitions and emotional resilience workshops.
Specialist and Enhanced Support
We are committed to inclusivity and offer tailored support through:
- Transition Plus Morning (June 30th): A morning for students with SEND to meet our specialist team and familiarise themselves with the building before the main transition days.
- Enhanced Transition Groups: Smaller group sessions with SST team from the local authority who will work with key students who may require extra support in managing the emotional changes of moving to high school.
- 1-1 Parental Meetings: Opportunities for parents to meet with staff to discuss specific concerns or needs.
Starting Year 7
The transition doesn't end when the term begins. Our "soft landing" in September includes:
- A Dedicated First Day: Only Year 7 students are on site for their first day to help them settle in, get their timetables, and complete school admin.
- Parent/Carer Welcome Lunch: On the first day, parents are invited to join their child for lunch and meet their new tutor.
- Ongoing Support: from tutor events, information sharing, coffee mornings and book looks our aim is to ensure the correct support is in place for your child to succeed
We look forward to welcoming you to the Longbenton High School community!
